Review + Tutorial: Anna Sui Autumn 2010 Makeup Trend

This year’s Fall makeup trend ushers in a refreshing change from the usual dark brooding colors. You still wouldn’t look off trend with pale skin, dark eyes and dark lips but for those of you who aren’t quite as emo, try the key color for Fall 2010 – yellow!

Anna Sui Autumn 2010 Cosmetics Collection, Kaleidoscopic Illusions, has a line-up of bright eyeshadows, which have been revamped to replace their previous line.

Read on for reviews, swatches, looks, and a tutorial. I’ve got something cute to show you at the end of the post!

It won't be a surprise if there are some people who buy Anna Sui cosmetics simply for the packaging. Look at that mother-of-pearl-esque casing and tell me it's not beautiful! The design was apparently inspired by Anna Sui's home furniture and interior decorations, which are embedded with mother-of-pearl.

I have the Anna Sui Eye Color in two colors:

900 (Light Green) -- pastel seafoam blue with sparse turquoise shimmers
801(Yellow) -- bright yellow with soft silver sparkles

The texture of these eyeshadows feel as if they are powdery matte eyeshadows. However, they do give off pretty good color vibrancy. They blend relatively well but can get slightly chalky if not properly layered. No prizes for guessing that I'm in love with the yellow. It's almost golden but not quite there. Good thing!

There are 25 colors in the range and I believe the texture as well as amount of shimmer vary from color to color.

Another eyeshadow in the new range is the more popular Anna Sui Eye Color Duo. The bottom portion (usually a darker color) is a cream eyeshadow while the top is a sheer powder eyeshadow. The idea is to apply the cream first and layer the powder over half of the cream to create a third color. Doing so, you'd get like this well-blended three-color look without actually having to blend. If only it was that easy!

Mine is in 03 Cool Green Nuance which contains a metallic royal blue for the cream and a light golden brown for the powder. When layered, the third color's supposed to be this light green but all I'm really seeing is a muddy teal? The blue generally has a poor color pay-off which takes forever to layer because a little bit of it keep rubbing off when a layer is added. The brown is basically just a sheer shimmery blending color.

When used together, the combination is not bad but here's where the weakness of the cream eyeshadow ruins everything. It creases horribly! Before I can even walk out the door, it has already started to crease. In the pictures above, I applied the cream eyeshadow over a layer of Urban Decay Primer Potion. If that can't get the color to stay, I don't know what can. Nice color combination or not, I'm done trying to make the cream eyeshadow work. The powder one is at least still usable.

For a bright fall look, combine yellow eyeshadow with warm browns. You can also apply a dark brown on the lower lash line instead of the seafoam blue to make the look more sultry. Add a very dark brown or soft black eyeshadow to the outer V if you want a more smoky look. I've used a very dark and thick liner to create more contrast, making the yellow pop even more.

The Anna Sui Mini Rouge V is limited edition including two more colors; Vivid Red and Vivid Pink. They do have it in the permanent line but the rose is black. It's meant to be a mobile phone dangler or key chain so you'll have access to glossy lips on the go!

03 Vivid Purple is very sheer, just giving a hint of color and shine to the lips. I think it makes a decent tinted lip balm but not so much a gloss.

Anna Sui cosmetics are available at all Anna Sui counters.

Rica: It's adorable! If you have Anna Sui cosmetics in Canada then it should be available. But I'm not entirely sure since Anna Sui cosmetics are pretty much Asian

hi connie, can you suggest to me which one is the best eyeliner brush to do the wing?

Connie De Alwis said...

Gio: thanks! I knew you'd like the yellow ;)

Charming Vanity: They definitely put a lot of effort into the aesthetics of their packaging

Juan: Buying something just for the packaging is sometimes followed by guilt. Though, I like the yellow so much that I'm not really looking into other yellows...

Natasha: I like using a flat rounded tapered tip brush but some people may feel more comfortable using a slim liner brush (like the one I used in the vid) or a wide but flat brush or an angled one. All depends on your personal preference!
